Fighting Squirrels Celebrate Home Run

STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin University softball team defeated Wilson College 11-3 this afternoon in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader.

Mary Baldwin jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning.  Montana Welcher started the Fighting Squirrels off when she doubled to left field.  Sam Bird and Morgan Tully walked then Alli Bascunan singled to left field earning two RBI's.  Kristen Anderson followed with a double down the right field line to drive home two more runs.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second inning.

In the third inning, Mary Baldwin doubled their lead.  Sam Bird started the rally when she homered to left field.  Morgan Tully then got on base with a walk.  Bascunan singled to right field advancing the runner.  Anderson then earned another RBI when she singled to right field and advanced the runners.  Jordan Miller added a single to center field to score the third run of the inning.  Chrissy Cromer then hit a sacrifice fly to give the home team an 8-0 lead.

Wilson got on the board scoring one run in each the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings.

Mary Baldwin took advantage of an error by Wilson to add a run in the 5th inning.  Then, two runs in the 6th inning ended the game giving Mary Baldwin the 11-3 win.

Sam Bird finished the first game with 3 runs, 2 hits, and 1 RBI including one home run.  Alli Bascunan added 3 runs, 3 hits and 3 RBI's.    Kristnen Anderson and Pattie Pleasants added 2 hits each.

In the second game, Mary Baldwin struggled to get their offense going.  Wilson jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and the Fighting Squirrels could only score one run in the 3rd inning.  That run came when Jordan Miller hit her first home run of her college career.  Wilson added a couple of insurance runs in the 4th inning and took a 5-1 win.

After the game, head coach Christy Shelton said, "I was very pleased with how we played today.  In the first game our defense was solid and we hit the ball well.  Heather Mayes pitched a great ballgame.  In the second game we got behind quickly and our bats were sporadic. We needed to be more consistent stringing hits together.  I thought Kate Dickinson came in and pitched well.  It was good to see us put it all together."

Mary Baldwin, 1-9 (0-6 USAS), is scheduled to have a busy week but could change with the forcasted weather.  Check the website for the latest updates.
