
The Mary Baldwin softball team scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 win over Averett in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader to secure the team's first conference win of the season. Averett won the first game, 6-0.
After shutting out the Squirrels in the fist game of the doubleheader 6-0, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead in Game 2 after scoring one run in the top of the fifth inning.
The Squirrels finally got the offense untracked in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie tehs econd game. With one out, Olivia Gagne doubles and moved to third on a base hit by Leanna Rankin. After Rankin stole second, Gagne scored on a wild pitch for MBU's first run. With two outs, Hadley May kept the inning alive by drawing a walk amd Emily Hall followed with a single, scoring Rankin to tie the score 2-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Rankin singled with one out. With two outs, May walked and Hall followed with a groundball to the hole at short and all runners were safe to lead the bases. Lacey Morris then grounded a single throught the infield to score Rankin, giving the Squirrels the walk-off, 3-2 victory.
Molly Thompson went the distance in the circle to pick up the win. Thompson allowed two runs on six base hits.
Rankin, Norris and Gagne each had two hits in the Game 2 victory.
In the two games Wednesday, Rankin was 4-for-8 at the plage. Gabne was 4-for-5 in the DH and May finished 3-for-5.
