MBU Track Finishes 10th at CNU

Newport News, Virginia—The MBU track team continued its inaugural season last Saturday at Christopher Newport University’s New Captain Classic Collegiate Invitational. The Fighting Squirrels faced stiff competition from DI and DII schools participating. Nevertheless, MBU continued to show improvement in a variety of events and tied for 10th overall out of 15 participating teams.

Brittany Tenn broke her own school record in the shot put with a big throw of 10.52m. Tenn won her flight and made the finals, finishing sixth overall.

Shari Moody also bested her own record in the long jump with a distance of 4.82m, finishing 13th overall. Unfortunately, in doing so she twinged her hamstring and was unable to compete in her remaining events.

Finally, Stephanie Barbaro lowered her record in the 800m run with a time of 2:54.87. This was impressive to accomplish considering that she was doubling-back from racing her first ever 2000m steeplechase.

Coach Ely thought the team had a great day. “Coaches love seeing their athletes continually improve and progress. We had a number of personal bests today, and a few new school records. I was particularly happy with Brittany’s performance in the shot put. We’re looking for big things from her in the future. And Stephanie is just willing to try her best in anything we ask of her. She showed that today in her first steeple, the 800, and leading off the 4x400 relay in Shari’s place.”

The team has one more opportunity to improve on their times and marks this season. On May 3rd, the team travels back to the Mattes-Hopkins Track complex for the Liberty Twilight meet. Field events start at 11:30. Running events begin at 2:00 pm.
