In addition to completing the best athletic season in more than a decade, Mary Baldwin student-athletes registered another strong year in the classroom.
Athletic highlights included:
Four teams (women's soccer, men's basketball, softball and women's tennis ... plus cross country and track & field) qualified for the USA South conference playoffs - that's the most since 2012.
Two teams (women's soccer and softball) won opening round playoff games ... the first time since MBU joined the USA South in 2008. This was the second-straight year with at least 60 wins (combining all sports). MBU had 69 last year. Previous high since joining the USA South was 30 wins in 2019-20 (which was cut short by the pandemic)
Individual awards included one USA South Rookie of the Year (softball Trinity Thomas), 10 USA South all-conference awards, including the first-ever USA South baseball all-star (Josh Lallo) and two student-athletes representing MBU and the USA South Conference at the 2023 NCAA Convention (women's soccer goalkeeper Anyka Wilkin and baseball infielder/pitcher Gavin Rush.
MBU athletics year-end awards were presented for Athlete of the Year to Wilkin and men's track and field standout Christopher Kirksey). Sofball standout Thomas and baseball catcher Josh Lallo were the Newcomers of the Year. Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year homors went to soccer defenders Katie Hayes and Kyle Creamer). The Mary Jane Donnalley Award for highest GPA in the athletic departmen went to softball's Sam Grimsley and baseball's Juan Vascones.
The Christy Shelton Award for Leadership Excellence was presented to men's and women's soccer grad assistant Erik Recke.
