Christy Shelton enters her 20th year at Mary Baldwin by being announced as the new associate director of athletics in September 2019.
Shelton arrived at MBU in 1999 before helping create the softball program in 2001. By 2004, Shelton was named the head coach of the program leading the team to a pair of NCAA appearances and two Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference (AWCC) titles. In addition to her role as softball coach, Shelton serves as the senior woman administrator for the last several years and has also been in charge of facility and business management aspects of the department. In her role as associate director of athletics, she will continue to oversee administrative functions and serve on the department leadership team.
In addition to working with MBU Athletics, Shelton coaches a local travel softball team, Augusta Flames, and has been involved with the National Softball Association, Amateur Softball Association, and U.S. Specialty Sports Association as a coach and player with teams throughout Augusta County.
As a student at Mary Baldwin, Shelton was a two-sport athlete on the volleyball and basketball teams with the Fighting Squirrels. Shelton still sits atop the basketball record books with a scoring average of nearly 18 points per game and is seventh all-time in scoring with 1,061 points as one of just 11 players to achieve the 1,000 point plateau
