Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader

RUTHER GLEN, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University baseball team swept the VCU club team in a doubleheader in National Club Baseball Association action on Saturday.

The Fighting Squirrels garnered a 20-4 win in game one before completing the doubleheader sweep with an 8-0 win in the night cap. Both games were seven-inning contests.

In game one, MBU scored in every inning as it ended after four complete innings. Nine Fighting Squirrels recorded base hits and batters drew 13 walks as MBU plated 20 runs on 10 hits and also took advantage of four errors from the home team. Colby Cheatham, Jacob Cude and Matthew Delp each recorded three RBI, while Tucker Hensley, Quincy Wilkins and Dylan Rankin drove in two runs each.

On the mound, Kyle Measell started his second game of the season and picked up his first win of his collegiate career after tossing all 4.0 innings and allowing four runs, just one earned. He also struck out six batters compared to just two walks.

In the night cap, Hensley tossed a complete-game shutout and scattered just three hits in 7.0 innings on the hill. He struck out three and did not walk a batter as he tallied his first collegiate victory on the young season.

Cheatham and Rankin each tallied multi-hit performances, while Cameron Geanas drove in two runs without recorded an at-bat.

The Fighting Squirrels and the VCU club team close out their three-game series tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 23 with first pitch scheduled for 12:45 pm.
