
FERRUM, Va. – On the heels of a weekend sweep of the VCU club baseball team, the Mary Baldwin University baseball team returned to action against Ferrum's developmental team in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
The Fighting Squirrels (4-3) faltered in both ends of the twin bill falling in game one, 3-2, in extra innings and 9-6 in the night cap.
In game one, MBU scored the first run of the contest in the second inning before yielding two runs in the bottom half of the third frame. The Fighting Squirrels were able to come back and tie the game in the last inning of a seven-inning contest, but the home side plated the game-winning run in the eighth for the win.
Quincy Wilkins started on the bump for MBU and went 2.0 innings allowing two runs on two hits. Matthew Plotner tossed 5.0 innings of relief and yielded just one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Cameron Geanas was 1 for 2 at the plate with two RBI, while Dylan Rankin, Kyle Measell and Tucker Hensley each recorded hits.
In game two, FC's club squad plated a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 advantage early on. A huge six-run frame in the fifth vaulted the Fighting Squirrels ahead by a 6-2 count before allowing a pair in the fifth and a five-spot in the sixth as FC walked away with a 9-6 victory to complete the sweep.
Levi Mitchell started on the hill and tossed 2.0 innings and yielded three hits and two runs, while Zach King, Colby Cheatham and Tucker Hensley all took the mound.
The Fighting Squirrels sit idle for Spring Break before returning to action as they play at home for the first time on March 11 at The Diamond Club in Stuarts Draft against Paul D. Camp Community College in a single game. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
