
STUART'S DRAFT, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University baseball team played its first home contest in program history at The Diamond Club on Wednesday.
The fighting Squirrels fell to Paul D. Camp Community College, 16-12, in extra innings.
The Hurricanes started the game by plating a pair of runs to jump ahead, 2-0, early. MBU responded with six runs in the home half of the frame. Noah Kessler came around to score on a single by Jakob King, 2-1, who scored on a passed ball, 2-2. Cameron Geanas singled in Tucker Hensley to put MBU ahead 3-2 before he and Wilkins scored on a two-run single by Jacob Cude, 5-2. The last run came across home plate as Colby Cheatham drove in Cude on a double to right-center field, 6-2.
PDC got two back in the second but MBU added one run in the fourth and fifth to stay ahead 8-4. The Fighting Squirrels tallied three more in the seventh frame before the Hurricanes battled back and scored seven runs across the final two innings to tie the score at 11-11 and force an extra frame where PDC plated five more runs to go ahead 16-11. MBU added one run but fell short, 16-12.
Jakob King finished 5 for 6 at the plate with five RBI and a run scored, while Cude drove in a pair of runs and scored three times after going 3 for 5 at the plate.
Seven pitchers took the hill for the Fighting Squirrels, including Hensley who started and went 2.0 innings and gave up four runs (two unearned). Kyle Measell entered in relief and tossed 5.0 scoreless frames without scattering a hit and struck out five batters.
