
Mary Baldwin split its baseball doubleheader Saturday with Mt. Aloysius, winning the opener 8-3 and dropping the second game 7-3 at John Moxie Stadium.
The Squirrels took a 2-0 lead after just three batters in the bottom of the first. Michael Robertson led off with a single and raced home on a double by Noah Kessler for a 1-0 MBU lkead. Jared Mayhew plated Kessler with a single to right, making the score 2-0.
MBU padded the lead in the second inning with four runs. The Squirrels took advantage of four Mounties' errors to go along with run-scoring singles by Dylan Rankin and Colby Cheatham to increast the lead to 6-0.
After Mt. Aloysius cut into the margin with two runs in the top of the fifth, Mary Baldwin answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Cheatham led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Owen Marshall. Cheatham scored on Michael Barber's single for a 7-2 Squirrels lead. Barber later scored on Blake French's single to make it 8-2.
Tucker Hensley picked up the win on the mound with his second complete-game effort of the season. Hensley allowed three runs on six hits while striking out nine and walking two.
Robertson was 3-for-3 at the plate from his leadoff position and scored two runs. Cheatham also had three hits and drove in a run. Rankin was 2-for-4 at the plate with one run batted in.
Mt. Aloysius jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second game before MBU got on the board with Kessler's solo homer to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
The Mounties stretched the lead with four runs in the sixth to go up 7-1.
Mary Baldwin scored its final two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Squirrels loaded the bases with no outs on consecutive singles by Robertson, Kessler and Mayhew. One run scored on a double play and Hensley drove in the other run with a single to left.
Mary Baldwin (3-7) and Mt. Aloysius will complete their three-game series on Sunday with a 9-inning contest starting at noon.
