
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Hampden-Sydney pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday to take the lead and the Tigers held on to defeat Mary Baldwin, 4-3, in non-conference baseball action.
Mary Baldwin grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the third inning. Blake French walked and moved to second on a passed ball. French scored on a single by Gavin Rush for a 1-0 MBU lead.
After the Tigers tied the score with a run in the bottom of the fifth, MBU regained the upper hand with a run in the sixth. Noah Kessler walked and moved to second on a balk. Colby Cheatham singled to put runners on the corners before a sacrifice fly by Tucker Hensley gave the Squirrels a 2-1 lead.
Again, H-SC pulled even with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Squirrels answered in the seventh to regain the lead. Michael Barber reached on an error and moved to second on French's sac bunt. Rush delivered his second run-scoring hit of the game, chasing Barber home to put the Squirrels on top 3-2.
Hampden-Sydney then scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead and held on for the win. MBU had runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings but was unable to push across the tying run.
Freshman righthander Alex Belako turned in a strong start for the Squirrels, allowing just one run on two hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked two.
Rush was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Kessler was also 2-for-3.
