
CARY, N.C. - Big innings plagued the Mary Baldwin baseball team Saturday as the Fighting Squirrels dropped a doubleheader at William Peace, losing the opener 22-0 and the second game 14-5.
The Pacers used a 13-run outburst in the third inning to take control in the opener. Mary Baldwin has just three hits in the first game, one each by Michael Robertson, Jacob Cude and Gavin Rush.
In the second game, it was a seven-run fourth inning that allowed the home team to open up the lead.
Mary Baldwin scored its first run of the game in the top of the fourth on Owen Marshall's RBI single. The Squirrels scored two more runs in the top of the sixth. Dylan Rankin walked and moved to third on a base hit by Tyler Smith. A groundout by Marshall scored Rankin. After Cude singled, Robertson produced a run-scoring hit, making the score 13-3.
MBU scored its final two runs in the eighth inning. Cude singled and scored on a triple by Rush. Rush scored on a wild pitch for the Squirrels' final run.
Smith went 3-for-5 in the second game to pace the MBU offense.
