
STAUNTON, Va. - Mary Baldwin hosted Wilson College Sunday in a double-header and lost the first game to Wilson 7-10 and then won the second game 7-4 to improve to 2-3 on the season.
MBU started out slow in the first game with Wilson quickly jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first 4 innings before the Squirrels responded with a Tyler Morley single to bring in Michael Barber. The Squirrels scored again in the sixth when Jared Mayhew singled to center to score Barber again and make it a 6-2 game entering the final inning.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Phoenix scored another four runs to make it a 10-2 ballgame. The Squirrels rallied in the bottom of the inning when Colby Cheatham was hit by a pitch to leadoff the frame and and Will Earnesty walked. Michael Robertson singled scoring Cheatham. Noah Kessler singled to load the sacks and Barber walked to force in a run, making the score 10-4. Tucker Hensley scored a run with a single and Josh Lallo followed with a sacrifice fly to pull MBU to witthin 10-6. A Mayhew groundout socred another run to make it 10-7. The Squirrels had the bases loaded when Wilson recorded the final out to preserve the 10-7 win.
In the second game, the Squirrels quickly took the lead in the third on a two-run homer by Barber. Wilson fought back with three runs in the top of the fourth, but the Squirrels tied the score in the fourth when Dylan Rankin scored on a wild pitch.
MBU took the lead with a big inning in the fifth. With the bases losded Cheatham walked to froce home a run, giving the Squirrels a 4-3 lead. Robertson followed with a pinch-hit single for a 5-3 advantage. With the bases still loaded, Kessler grounded out, but two runs scored on the play to put MBU ahead 7-3.
Hensley pitched a complete game to get the win in Game 2. He allowed six hits and four runs while striking out six.
MBU third baseman Barber went 3-for-6 on the day with a home run, three RBIs, four runs scored and two walks. Robertson went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBIs, and a run scpred.
MBU is back in action Wednesday (March. 1) when the team travels to Stevenson (0-3) to play at 3 pm.
