Squirrels Drop Pair To Mounties

STAUNTON, Va. - Mary Baldwin hosted Mount Aloysius College Sunday in a doubleheader and lost the first game 6-1 and the second game 8-3.

MBU started out slow in the first game with the Mounties quickly jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Mounties addedtwo more runs in the fifth and their final two runs in the seventh to lead 6-0.

The Squirrels scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh when a Jacob Cude single was followed by a Brandon Ward RBI-single to finish the game 6-1.

The Squirrels left five runners stranded in the game while tallying 7 hits and struggled on defense with four errors. 

Mount Aloysius pitcher Seth Smith pitched a complete game, limiting the Squirrels to seven hits.

In the second game, the Mounties scored a run in the second off a solo home run before the Squirrels responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inming. Tyler Morley reached on an error and Cude singled to put two runners on base. Gavin Rush moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Ward followed with a single to center for two RBIs and a 2-0 MBU lead.

The Mounties responded with six runs in the top of the third and one more in the fourth to lead 8-2. The Squirrels answered with another run in the bottom of the fourth when Colby Cheatham was hit by a pitch, took second on a wold pitch and advanced to third on a balk. Noah Kessler singled to score Cheatham, making the score 8-3.

Just like in the first game Mary Baldwin hitters were stopped by Mount Aloysius pitching as starter Chris Hasse went the distance, holding the Squirrels to just six 6 hits.

For the Squirrels, Kessler and Cude each went 3-for-6 on the day.  MBU pitcher Ty Webster threw 5.2 innings in the opener andallowed just two earned runs..

MBU is back in action Tuesday (March. 7) when the team travels to Bridgewater to play at 3 p.m
