Brevard Takes Two From MBU Baseball

BREVARD, N.C. - Brevard took both games of Saturday's doubleheader from Mary Baldwin, blanking the Squirrels in the first game 8-0 and then winning the second game, 6-4.

Brevard silenced the Squirrels in the opener as Mary Baldwin managed seven hits, but left nine runners on base. Josh Lallo and Jacob Cude had two hits each for the Squirrels.

Ty Webster took the loss on the mound despite pitching well. Webster worked six innings, allowed eight hits and just two earned runs.

Mary Baldwin took a quick lead in the second game. The Squirrels loaded the bases in the first with no outs as Michael Robertson was hit by a pitch and took third on a double by Noah Kessler, Lallo walked to load the bases and, with one out, Tucker Hensley singled, giving the Squirrels a 1-0 lead. 

Brevard forged ahead 6-1 and then held off a late MBU comeback bid. 

The Squirrels scored two runs in the eighth  Cude led off with a single and Colby Cheatham drew a two-out walk. Cude scored on a single to center by Robertson and when the ball was misplayed in the outfield, Cheatham was able to score, pulling the Squirrels to within 6-3.

With one out in the ninth, Tyler Morley singled and moved to third on a single by Hensley. Morley scored on Cude's sac fly to make it 6-4 before Brevard got the final out to secure the sweep.

MBU had 12 hits in the second game and left 13 runners on base. Hensley and Cude had three hits each while Robertson, Kessler and Lallo each added two hits.

The two teams meet again Sunday to complete three three-game series.
