STAUNTON, Va. - Mary Baldwin dropped both ends of a Sunday baseball doubleheader to N.C. Wesleyan, lsoing the opener 11-4 and the second game 19-6.
MBU starting pitcher Alex Belako and reliever Matthew Plotner combined to limit the Bishops to just two runs in the first five innings of Game 1 to keep the Squirrels close, trailing just 2-0. The Bishops then broke the game open with six runs in the sixth to lead 8-0.
MBU scored all of its runs in the ninth. The Squirrels loaded the bases on singles by Owen Marshall and Tyler Helbert and awalk to Jacob Cude. Will Earnesty plated two runs with a bases-leaded single and a third run scored on the play when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Michael Robertson added a run-scoring single for Mary Baldwin's final run.
The Bishops jumped out to a 4-2 lead after one inning and never trailed in the second game.
Afater the Bishops put four runs up in the top of the first, the Squirrels answered in their half of the inning. Robertson reached on an error and Noah Kessler followed with a base hit. The two executed a double steal and Robertson scored when the catcher's throw sailed into left field. Dylan Rankin added a single to pull MBU to within 4-2.
MBU added its final two runs in the ninth on RBI-singles by Tyler Morley and Landon Lightner.
The two teams will complete the three-game series Monday morning.
