STAUNTON, Va. - The Mary Baldwin baseball team hosted Ferrum in baseball action Wednesday and lost, 6-5.
The Panthers struck early with a run in the first, but the Squirrels responded in the second inning with two runs. MBU loaded the bases when JT Stevenson singled, Jacob Cuse bunted for a hit and Lucas Chinault was hit by a pitch. Kelly Hackley's sac fly scored Stevenson befpre a single by Brayton McDonald scored Cude for a 2-1 MBU lead.
The Squirrels scored again in the sixth. Stevenson singled and moved to second on Cude's sacrifice bunt. Stevenson scored on a Ferrum error, giving the Squirrels a 3-1 lead.
The Panthers tied the game in the top of the seventh but the Squirrels answered in the bottom of the inning to regian the lead. Michael Robertson led off the inning with a triple and scored on Will Earnesty's sac fly for a 4-3 MBU lead.
Ferrum tied the game with a run in the eighth and then scored two in the ninth to lead 6-4.
In the bottom of the ninth, McDonald reached on an error and Blake Frech added a single. Roberston moved the unnners up with a sac bunt and was safe at first on a throwing error. Pinch-runner Brady Ward tried to score on the play but was throw out at the plate. Fremch then scored on a wild pitch, but MBU's rally came up one run short as Ferrum escaped with the 6-5 win.
MBU will return to action when they travel to Lexington, Va., to face Washington and Lee on Thursday, April 27, at 4:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
