
FREDERICK, Md. – The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team opened up its season at the Hood College Tip-Off Tournament and took on the No. 1 team in Division III, ranked Randolph-Macon in non-conference action on Friday evening. The Fighting Squirrels took their first loss of the season 71-49 to fall to 0-1, while Randolph-Macon improved to 2-0.
Sophomore guard Quentin Hart tallied a team-high 14 points for MBU. Hart was was 5-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-5 from downtown.
Sophomore guard Brett Asbury led defensively for the Squirrels with 7 rebounds and 2 steals and was second on the team in scoring with 10 points on he finished 4-for-9 from the field.
Mary Baldwin went into the half down 46-20 but outscored the Yellow Jackets in the second half 29-25.
As a team, the Fighting Squirrels connected on 37.3% (19-51) from the field. Also, MBU shot 31.3% (5-16) from three. Randolph-Macon stopped the Squirrels with their efficient shooting as they shot 53.4% from the field, including 35.7% (5-14) from 3. Mary Baldwin was outrebounded 35-25 by Randolph-Macon.
The Fighting Squirrels will return to action Saturday afternoon for the second round of the Hood College Tip-Off Tournament where MBU will face Goucher.
