Squirrels Hold Off Goucher For First Win

FREDERICK, Md. - The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team won its first game of the season Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Hood College Tip-Off Tournament. The Fighting Squirrels defeated Goucher 66-57 and are now 1-1 on the season while Goucher falls to 0-2.

Sophomore guard Jaden Ignacio went off for a game-high 24 points, making 9-of-12 shots from the field and 6-of-9 from downtown He also gathered a team-high three steals and added two assists. Ignacio was selected to the all-tournament team.

Freshman forward Luke Ogle led defensively for the Squirrels with 13 rebounds and two steals.

Mary Baldwin was back and forth at the start before the Squirrels opened up a 36-27 cushion at the half. In the second half, the Squirrels matched Goucher in points 30-30, securing the 66-57 win.

The Squirrels were able to withstand the Gopher's 53-42 rebounding advantage by showing better shooting efficiency from the floor 34.4% to Goucher's 32.3% and from 3-point range three 31% to Goucher's 25%. Mary Baldwin also committed fewere turnovers with 13 compared to its opponent's 17. 

The Fighting Squirrels will travel to Lexington, Va. on Tuesday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. to face Washington and Lee University in non-conference action.
