W&L Holds Off Squirrels In Overtime

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team dropped an overtime thriller at Washington and Lee University in a non-conference game that featured nine lead changes. The Fighting Squirrels were defeated 100-106 and are now 1-2 on the season while the Generals rise to 2-0.

Sophomore guard Jaden Ignacio went off for a team-high 30 points, making 12-of-18 shots from the field and 5-of-8 from downtown. Sophomore forward Brandon Stoudamire tallied 22 points and sophomore guard Brett Asbury added 21 points as the Squirrels shot an efficient 40-72 (55%) from the field and 12-24 (50%) from 3-point range

.Freshman forward Luke Ogle was solid  defensively for the Squirrels with six rebounds and four blocks.

Mary Baldwin jumped out to a quick 13-point lead, 36-23, in the first half on  efficient shooting (67.74%) from the floor and (57.14%) from three but the lead dwindles as the Generals capitalized off of fouls and turnovers to bring the marginn down to three points, 48-45, at the half.

In the second half, the Squirrels matched the Generals in a back-and-forth contest. The Squirrels were down by six points with 1:42 left before back-to-back layups by Asbury and a game-tying jumper from Quentin Hart sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Generals jumped out to a six-point lead in the first 2 minutes and held that lead until the end of the game.

The Squirrels were outrebounded by the Generals 36-28 but showed a better shooting efficiency from the floor and three. However, Washington and Lee had a 33-3 fast break points advantage along with a 39-point outburest from Washington and Lee's junior Forward Robert DiSibio. .

The Fighting Squirrels will travel to Roanoke, Va., on Friday, Nov. 18 at 8:00 p.m. to face Salisbury in non-conference action at the 2022 Dick Leftwich Tip-Off Tournament.
