MBU Drops Second Straight Overtime Game

SALEM, Va. - The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team opened the Frankie Allen Tip-off Tournament at Roanoke College by falling in overtime Friday evening to Salisbury University, 74-69. The loss was the second straight overtime setback for the Squirrels who are now 1-3 on the season.

Sophomore guard Brett Asbury tallied a double-double with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds for MBU. Asbury was 5-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-3 from 3-point range. He was also 6-for-7 at the free throw line.

MBU had three players finish with double-digit points with sophomore guard Jaden Ignacio scoring 13 points and Brandon Stoudamire adding 10. Also, for the Squirrels, freshman Luke Ogle had 11 rebounds.

Mary Baldwin went into the half down 32-29, however, the Sea Gulls came out of the half with a 10-1 run, putting the Squirrels down by 12 points with 17 minutes to go.

The Squirrels fought back and eventually pulled even, 49-49, on an Asbury bucket with nine minutes to go. The final five minutes in regulation were a back-and-forth battle coming down to the wire. The contest was the second OT game for MBU and the third for Salisbury this season. The Sea Gulls opened the overtime period with a 3-pointer and maintained the lead the rest of the way. 

The Fighting Squirrels connected on 36.1% (22-for-61) from the field and 26.1% (6-for-23) from long range. Salisbury stopped the Squirrels with their efficient shooting as they shot 46.7% from the field, including 40.0% (8-for-20) from 3-point range.

The Fighting Squirrels will return to action Saturday afternoon for the consolation round of the Frankie Allen Tip-off Tournament where MBU will face Alfred. Alfred lost its game Friday to Roanoke College, 87-56.
