Alfred Turns Back MBU, 82-67

SALEM, Va. – The Mary Baldwin men's basketball finished the Frankie Allen Tip-off Tournament with a loss in the consolation game against Alfred University in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Squirrels took their fourth loss of the season 82-67 to fall to 1-4, while Alfred improved to 3-2.

Sophomore guards Brett Asbury, Jaden Ignacio, and Quentin Hart each tallied 15 points. Asbury shot the most efficiently for the Squirrels with 60% (6-for-10) from the field and 50% (1-for-2) from three. He also had three steals, assists, and rebounds. Asbury was named to the all-tournament team

Sophomore Forward Vernon Fraley tallied 13 points and grabbed four rebounds.

The Fighting Squirrels opened the first half with an 11-4 run to put the Saxons behind early however after a comeback from the Saxons the Squirrels went into the half trailing 39-38. The offense for the squirrels cooled down in the second half. After shooting 54.57% (15-for-28) from the field and 40% (6-for-15) from three in the first two quarters, MBU dropped to 34.38% (11-for-32) from the field and 26.67% (4-for-15) from three in the second second half.

The Squirrels cut the Saxon's lead to just two points, 63-61, with six minutes left to play and the teams exchanged baskets until the 2:13  mark when Alfred led 71-67. The Saxons went 8-for-8 at the line down the stretch to clinch the victory/

The Fighting Squirrels will return to action Tuesday evening when they hosti Randolph at 6:00 pm for their home opener. The Wildcats are is 3-2 on the season and last played Mary Baldwin on Nov. 17 2021 when the Squirrels lost in overtime 119-115.
