Second-Half Surge Lifts Squirrels Past WildCats

STAUNTON, Va. - The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team won their home opener Tuesday evening in non-conference action against Randolph College. The Fighting Squirrels defeated Randolph 88-79 and are now 2-4 on the season while Randolph falls to 3-3.

Sophomore forward Brandon Stoudamire went off for a game-high 27 points, making 12-of-14 shots from the field and 1-of-2 from downtown. He also gathered two steals and two dunks. Sophomore forward Vernon Fraley led on both ends of the court for the Squirrels with seven rebounds and 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting and 3-for-6 from three.

Mary Baldwin played back and forth at the start before the WildCats pulled ahead by 10 points, 34-24, with 2:47 left in the half. MBU closed the half with a 9-2 spurt to trail by just three, 36-33 at the break.

The Squirrels used a 12-0 spurt in the second half to take control. Leading 60-59, MBU scored the next 12 points to take its biggest lead, 72-59, with 5:33 left in the game. Stoudamire scored on a short jumper and Quentin Hart knocked down a 3-pointer for a 65-59 lead. Pat Malott sonverted a three-point play and Stoudamire drove the baseline for a crowd-pleasing dunk to push the margin to 70-59. Hart then converted a steal into an easly layup to put the Squirrels up by 13 points.

In the second half, the Squirrels outshot Randolph with a 55.3% clip (18-for-32) from the field and a 41.7% (5-for-12) effort from 3-point range. Randolph shot 44.1 % (15-for-34) from the floor and 20% (2-for-10) from three.

The Squirrels strong shooting in the second half was enough to overcome the WildCats'44-33 rebounding advantage.

The Fighting Squirrels will travel on Friday, November 25 to face Division 1 Longwood University.
