MBU Holds Off Brevard For Conference Victory

STAUNTON, Va. - Mary Baldwin used a 6-0 spurt late in the second half to take a seven-point lead and Fighting Squirrels held on for an 84-77 victory over Brevard in conference play Wednesday afternoon.

Brevard led by as many as nine points in the first half before MBU chipped away at the defict to trail by just one, 37-36, at the half.

The visitors maintained the lead early in the second half until a layup by Brandon Stoudamire pulled MBU even at 48-48 with 15:37 left in the game.

A jumper by Jaden Ignacio gave the Squirrels their first lead of the second half, 52-50, at the 11:35 mark. The score was tied at 52, 54 and 56 before MBU took the lead for good.

The lead was just one, 68-67, with 3:33 left, but a 6-0 spurt pushed the Squirrels' advantage to seven, 74-67.

Mary Baldwin placed four players in double figures, led by Brett Asbury and Stoudamire with 19 points each. Asbury also added eight rebounds and four assists. ignacio came off the bench to score 16 points and Quentin Hart added 10. 

MBU,, now 6-6 overall and 1-0 in the conference, will be back in action at the PAC on Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. tip against Methodist.
