Men's Basketball Drops First Conference Game

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team lost Saturday evening in conference action against William Peace University. The Fighting Squirrels were defeated by the Pacers 87-75 and are now 3-1 in the USA South conference standings while Peace rises to 4-1.

The Squirrels had five players with double digits, Sophomore forward Brandon Stoudamire led the team with 18 points shooting 7-for-14 from the field and 3-for-7 from three. Luke Ogle shot for an efficient 12 points, shooting 83% (5-for-6) from the field. Jaden Ignacio scored 11 points and tallied five assists. Quentin Hart followed with 10 points, shooting 4-for-8 from the field and 2-for-5 from three and Brett Asbury scored 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting.

The Fighting Squirrels opened the first half with a 9-5 run, but the Pacers recoverd to lead by nine, 43-34 at the half. The offense for the Squirrels caught up to the Pacers in the second half as MBU pulled ahead, 61-60, with 9:32 left to play on a bucket by Ogle.  The Pacers sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a bucket by Ogle to lead by seven with five minutes to play and William Peace led the rest of the way.

MBU shooting was solid, but the Pacers hit 10 threes in 20 attempts (50%) and and a perfect 17-for-17 from the free throw line to overcome the Squirrels. The Squirrels were also outrebounded 37-20.

The Fighting Squirrels will return to action Wednesday evening when they play at Southern Virginia in Buena Vista, Va., at 8:00 p.m. The Knights are 9-6 on the season and 2-2 in the USA South Conference.
