
BUENA VISTA, Va. - Mary Baldwin led by 10 points at halftime Wednesday evening, but the Squirrels needed a late rally to defeat Southern Virginia, 66-60 for a key conference road victory.
SVU hit the Squirrels with a 13-0 run to start the second half, erasing the 10-point MBU lead to forge ahead 36-33.
Mary Baldwin did not lead again until the final two minutes when guard Jaden Ignacio took over at the offensive end. Ignacio converted a three-point play to pull the Squirrels even, 56-56, with 2:04 left to play and his two foul shots with 1:40 remaining gave MBU a 58-56 edge. The Knights turned the ball over on two straight trips and Ignacio added a 3-pointer and two more foul shots, putting the Squirrels ahead 63-56 with just 30 second remaining.
Ignacio, Brandon Stoudamire and Quentin Hart carried the Squirrels at the offensive end. The trio combined to make 18-of-31 shots while the rest of the Squirrels combined to go 3-for-20 from the floor. Ignacio led the way with 21 points on 6-for-10 shooting, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range. Stoudamire was also 6-for-10 and scored 19 points while Hart made 6-of-11 shots, including 4-of-7 from long range.
The difference in the game was 3-point shooting as MBU made 10-of-24 from long range while SVU failed to make a 3-pointer in 10 attempts.
Mary Baldwin returns to action Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. when the Squirrels host N.C. Wesleyan. MBU and N.C. Wesleyan are tied for second place in the conference standings, each with a 4-1 record. William Peace leads the standings with a 5-1 mark.
