Late Push Lifts N.C. Wesleyan past MBU

STAUNTON, Va. - The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team lost Saturday evening in conference action against N.C Wesleyan University (13-4). The Fighting Squirrels were defeated by the Bishops 83-72 and are now 4-2 in the USA South conference standings while Wesleyan rises to 5-1.

The Squirrels had five players with double digits, Sophomore forward Vernon Fraley led the team with 14 points off the bench shooting 6-for-8 from the field and 1-for-1 from three. Jaden Ignacio shot for 13 points and Brett Asbury tallied a double-double with 11 points while tallying a team-high 12 rebounds and eight assists. Quentin Hart followed with 10 points, shooting 4-for-10 from the field and 2-for-7 from three and Brandon Stoudamire scored 10 points and gathered four rebounds.

The Fighting Squirrels opened the first half falling behind 12-5, but the Squirrels recovered to lead 24-22. The Bishops led 30-34 at the half. The offense for the Squirrels caught up in the second half after back-to-back threes by Hart gave the Squirrels a lead that they hled until two  minutes remained.  A three by Bishops guard Brayden Dixon turned the momentum against the Squirrels and gave the Bishops the lead 71-69.

MBU shot 41.8% from the field and 23.1% from three compared to the Bishops, 42.4% from the field and 14.3% from three. The Bishopss limited their turnovers with just six compared  to the Squirrels' 12.

The Fighting Squirrels will return to action Tuesday evening when they host Greensboro at 6:00 p.m. The Pride are 7-9 on the season and 2-3 in the USA South Conference.
