
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C - The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team finished their regular season with a loss in conference action against N.C Wesleyan University (21-4). The Fighting Squirrels were defeated by the bishops in a buzzer-beater finish 67-65 and are now 9-5 in the USA South conference standings while N.C Wesleyan rises to 13-1.
The Squirrels were up early in the first half by a score of 24-14 before the Bishops climbed back for a 35-33 halftime lead.
Out of the half, the Squirrels came out hot, taking a seven-point lead in just iive minutes. The Squirrels and Bishops traded baskets for the next 10 minutes then, the Bishops pulled to within one, 62-61, with 2:41 left. A Quentin Hart three gave the Squirrels a 65-61 lead, a lead MBU held until the Bishops pulled een with 27 seconds left on the clock. Hartmissed from 3-point range with 15 seconds left and Wesleyan's Brayden Dixon made a buzzer-beater to end the game 67-65.
The Squirrels had four players with double digits, Hart led the Squirrels in scoring with 14 points, shooting 5-of-11 from the field and 4-of-10 from three. He also grabbed four rebounds. Jaden Ignacio followed with 13 points shooting 6-of-10 from the field while dishing out a team-high three assists. Brett Asbury tallied 11 points shooting 4-for-7 from the field. Luke Ogle just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Fighting Squirrels finished their regular season with a 14-11 record which is the best in Mary Baldwin's brief basketball school history. MBU will return to action Tuesday (Feb, 21st) when they host Southern Virginia in the first round of the USA South tournament. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
