VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University men's soccer team grabbed a 2-1 win against Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday evening.
The Fighting Squirrels improve to 2-1 on the year as they continue their first season of NCAA competition. Meanwhile, the Marlins drop to 1-2 on the young season.
VWU opened the scoring of the contest in the 17th minute as Colin Innes scored from a feed from Matt Campbell. The lead held for a majority of the period until Ousmane Dansoko notched his first goal of the year to tied the game, which stayed true through halftime.
In the second half, Carr Panetta was able to score his second collegiate goal in the 50th minute as he received a ball from Kyle Creamer, 2-1. The Marlins were unable to tie the game throughout the remaining minutes as the Fighting Squirrels hung on for the 2-1 vicotry.
Jackson Davis earned his first start as he pushed aside two shots in the win, while Griffin Potter made four saves in the loss for the Marlins.
As a team, VWU outshot MBU by a slim 8-7 margin and also held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11, as they travel to face Bridgewater in a nonconference matchup scheduled to kick off at 4 pm.
