STAUNTON, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University men's soccer team opened its USA South campaign with a 2-0 loss to Maryville at SMA Worth Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Fighting Squirrels drop to 2-3 overall with an 0-1 mark in league play, while the Scots improve to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
In the first half, MBU thought they had scored the opening goal of the contest after Dylan Sykes took a ball out of the keeper's hands and found the back of the net near the beginning of the contest, but a foul was called before the goal to keep the match scoreless. The Scots finally got behind the Mary Baldwin goalkeeper in the 43rd minute as Jameson Elmore scored before Kai Miettinen notched an insurance goal just under a minute later, 2-0.
The 2-0 halftime score held true through the entire second half. The best chance for the Fighting Squirrels came on a penalty kick in the 70th minute that went high.
For the match, Obdulio Argueta stopped six shots in the loss, while Mykal Manfred made three saves in all 90 minutes in the cage.
Maryville outshot the home side 16-8, while each team had five corner kicks.
The Fighting Squirrels are back in action tomorrow, Sept. 15, against Berea at SMA Worth Field beginning at 1pm.
