STAUNTON, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University men's soccer team went into a second overtime period before scoring the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute against Southern Virginia University at SMA Worth Field on Wednesday evening.
In the first overtime period, the Knights (1-7) had two shots, but neither of them were on the mark, while the visitors held the Fighting Squirrels (4-3) without a shot. In the second period of extra time, Marcos Sasia possessed the ball and drew a foul to garner a free kick from just outside of the box. Sasia bent his shot around the wall in front of him and in the upper right corner of the net for the game-winner.
This marks the second overtime contest the Fighting Squirrels have been a part of in the last week of action.
The two sides were unable to score in the first half despite MBU sending off seven shots, including four on target in comparison to just three attempts from SVU. In the second period, both keepers were forced to make saves as the game remained scoreless, which forced the overtime periods.
MBU outshot SVU 17-11, while the Knights held a 5-2 edge in corners.
Obdulio Argueta stopped three shots in all 102 minutes, while Jacob Solis had to make five saves in the loss.
Mary Baldwin returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 21, as it travels to N.C. Wesleyan for a 2 pm start.
