STAUNTON, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University men's soccer team held on to a 1-0 lead to defeat Averett in its regular season finale at SMA Worth Field on Saturday.
The victory propelled the Fighting Squirrels into fourth place in the East Division of the USA South to clinch a berth in the league tournament. The official seedings for the tournament will be released by the conference after the completion of the regular season.
Before the game, the Fighting Squirrels honored their lone senior, Denny Jimenez, who is the first senior for the team, which is in its first season as a varsity sport.
In the first half, neither side tallied a score as each team finished the period with three shots. In the second half, the Fighting Squirrels got on the board in the 68th minute as Jimenez shot past the Averett goalkeeper who was charging for the ball. The shot went behind the defense and deflected off a Cougar before rolling across the goal line, 1-0 MBU.
The goal held to be the game-winner as the Fighting Squirrels picked up the 1-0 win and finish the regular season at 8-10 with a 5-8 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Cougars' season comes to an end with a 5-11-2 mark behind a 3-8-2 conference record.
Obdulio Argueta stopped three shots in all 90 minutes to post his fifth shutout of the season. Meanwhile, Colton Dutchess made four saves in the loss.
After being picked to finish last in the division in this year's preseason poll, the Fighting Squirrels will play in the USA South Men's Soccer Tournament as a first-year team. MBU will face top-seeded N.C. Wesleyan in Rocky Mount on Saturday, Nov. 2. Time and ticketing information will be released by the conference.
