STAUNTON, VA – The Mary Baldwin University softball team dropped both games in a nonconference doubleheader against Ferrum College, dropping the first game 11-6, and the second game 12-4 (5 inn) on Sunday afternoon.
The Fighting Squirrels move to 3-11 overall, while the Panthers move to 10-6 on the season.
In Game 1 of the afternoon, Lindsay Simmons led off the home half of the first inning with a single to left field. Madison Cash reached on a fielder's choice scoring Simmons, 1-0. Alexis Clark reached first on a throwing error, allowing Cash to score, 2-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Panthers second hitter, Lois Carpenter walked and Bayley Cunningham singled to allow Bailey Oakes to hit a three-run home run down the leftfield line, 3-2.
The Fighting Squirrels answered in the bottom half of the inning with Clark's first homer of the season. Lacey Pugh doubled down the left-field line and a Kayley Turner single scored Pugh from second, 4-3. Simmons' single scored Turner to put MBU up 5-2 heading into the fifth inning.
Ferrum scored five runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth with three of those runs coming from a Cunningham blast to score Cook and Carpenter. Mary Baldwin answered with one run in the fifth from a Pugh sacrifice fly to right field to score Cash, 11-6.
In Game 2 of the afternoon, Ferrum erupted for nine runs in the in the first inning, capped by a monstrous grand slam by Allison McGehee.
Mary Baldwin did their best to stay in the game with a three-run blast from Breeden in the bottom of the fifth.
Mary Baldwin will return to action on March 20, for a conference matchup at Averett set to begin at 2 pm.
