FERRUM, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University softball program was swept by nationally-recognized Ferrum on Wednesday.
The Fighting Squirrels fell to the No. 13 Panthers 13-5 in game one and 8-0 in the nightcap.
MBU got on the board first after Marybeth Strickler led off the game with a triple to center field and scored on a Samantha Grimsley single to right-center, 1-0. The Panthers responded with five runs in the home half of the frame, including a three-run homer to cap the scoring.
The Fighting Squirrels cut into the deficit with three runs in the next inning. Alexis Clark stroked a lead-off home run, 5-2, and Jordan Miller recorded a sac fly to score Daleya Scaife, 5-3. Strickler stayed alive after a dropped foul ball and singled to score Courteney Back, 5-4. FC came back in the bottom of the second with three more runs to jump ahead 8-4.
Strickler drove in Lacey Pugh in the fourth to cut the lead down to 8-5, but the Panthers plated five runs in the next two innings to end the game in five innings, 13-5.
Strickler was 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while Clark also had a multi-hit game with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Back was saddled with the loss after pitching 3.1 innings. Ashton Lambeth picked up her sixth win of the year after tossing 4.1 innings. She allowed five runs on 10 hits with four walks.
The Fighting Squirrels were held to just two hits in the second game of the day as the Panthers struck for eight runs in the last four innings to end the game after six innings.
Stormy Harrison was saddled with the loss, while Lyndsey Sears pitched a complete-game shutout with four strikeouts.
