
SALEM, Va. - Mary Baldwin split its two games Friday at the Mountain Mash Tournament, defeating Fredonia 5-2 and losing to Oneonta 15-7 at the Moyer Complex.
The Fighting Squirrels jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and held off Fredonia in the final innings to claim the win.
MBU talied twice in the second inning. Emily Hall led off with a single and Haley Roberts doubled. Hall scored on a groundout by Lacey Morris and Roberts raced home on a double by Allison Crum, giving the Squirrels a 2-0 lead.
Mary Baldwin plated two more runs in the third inning. Marybeth Strickler led off with a base hit, stole second and moved to third on a fly ball to center. After Leanna Rankin walked, Strickler scored on the back end of a double steal, making the score 3-0. Rankin later scored on a groundout by Morris to push the margin to 4-0.
After Fredonia trimmed the deficit to 4-2, MBU added an insurance run in the fifth when Roberts drew a two-out walk and then scored on a double by Morris for a 5-2 Squirrels lead.
Strickler paced the offense with two hits while also going the distance in the circle. She allowed just three hits and both of the Fredonia runs were unearned. She struck out 14 batters and walked eight.
Oneonta jumped out to an 11-2 lead after three innings and defeated MBU 15-7 in five innings. Morris drove in three runs and Crum added two RBIs.
Mary Baldwin returns to action Sunday when the team travels to Greensboro, N.C., to play Guilford College.
