
Mary Baldwin swept both ends of Friday's doubleheader with Randolph College, winning the first game 4-2 and edging the WildCats in Game 2 by a score of 7-6 in eight innings.
In the opener, Mary Baldwin broke free from a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Leanna Rankin reached on a bunt single and Allison Crum followed with a double. Alexis Clark then belted a three-run homer for a 3-0 MBU lead.
Randolph scored one in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it a one-run game, 3-2, but the Squirrels added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Clark and Hadley May both singled and both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Lacey Morris singled, scoring Clark to make it 4-2.
Morgan Hughes went the distance in the circle, allowing just two runs on four hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Randolph scored first in the second game, but MBU took the lead in the bottom of the first. Marybeth Strickler and Rankin both walked and a double steal put runners at second and third. Crum drove in one run with a single and a second run scored on Emily Hall's RBI-groundout, giving the Squirrels a 2-1 lead.
The teams traded runs in the second inning. After Randolph tied the score with a run in the top of the inning, Courtney Back belted a solo homer on the bottom of the frame for a 3-2 Squirrels' lead
Mary Baldwin added to its lead in the third inning. Crum and Hall both singled and Crum scored on a double by Morris, pushing the home team's lead to 4-2.
After Randolph scored three times in the fifth inning to grab a 5-4 edge, MBU's Morris blasted a solo homer to lead off the sixth, tying the score at 5-5.
The game moved to extra innings where each half inning begins with a runner on second base.
Randolph tallied once in the top of the eighth inning, but the Squirrels rallied to win it in the bottom of the eighth.
Samantha Grimsley's bunt single put runners at the corners and Crum beat the throw to the plate on a bunt by Morris to tie the score. Maisie Spivey singled to load the sacks and, with the bases full and two outs, Olivia Gagne lined a 2-2 pitch to right for the game-winning hit.
Molly Thompson allowed just one hit in 3.2 innings in the circle to pick up the win for Mary Baldwin. Crum. Morris and Back each had two hits to lead the offense.
Mary Baldwin, now 4-6-1 overall, is back in action Tuesday when the Squirrels travel to Bridgewater College.
