MBU Softball Splits At N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Mary Baldwin softball team split Saturday's conference doubleheader at North Carolina Wesleyan, winning the first game 6-1 before dropping Game 2 by a 10-2 margin.

The victory in the opener was the first in program history for MBU over the Battling Bishops.

Hadley May befted a solo homer and added a run-scoring double in Game 1 to spark the Fighting Squirrels with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate and two RBIs. Emily Hall was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and leadoff hitter Leanna Rankin also finished 2-for-4.

Rankin led off the game with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Hines. May and Hall followed with back-to-back run-scoring doubles to give the Squirrels a quick 2-0 lead.

May led off the hird inning with a solo homer, her second of the season, to put MBU ahead 3-0.

The Squirrels put the game away with a three-run surge in the fifth ininng. Hines reached base on a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. After May walked, Hall chased Hines home with her second double of the game, making the score 4-0. Allison Crum's base hit scpred May for a 5-0 Mary Baldwin lead. With runners on the corners, Crum was caught trying to steal second, but Hall scored on the play, making the score 6-0.

Morgan Hughes picked up the win in the circle with a strong starting performance. The lefty pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits. Hughes struck out four and walked two.

Mary Baldwin was limited to just four hits in the second game as the Bishops pulled away for the 10-2 victory.

Rankin was 2-for-3 for the Squirrels.
