
The Mary Baldwin softball team split Saturday's Senior Day doubleheader with Meredith, winning the opener 2-0 and losing the second game 12-3.
MBU's victory in Game 1 was the first victory over Meredith in program history.
Senior lefty Morgan Hughes dominated in the circle, limiting Meredith to just one hit in a domplete-game shutout. The only hit allowed by Hughes came in the top of the first inning.
The Squirrels snapped a scoreless tie with the game's only two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hadley May and Alexis Clark opened the inning with back-ot-back doubles, giving the Squirrels a 1-0 lead. McKaylee Shaffer, pinch-running for Clark, scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead.
Mary Baldwin jumped out to a quick lead in Game 2 with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Leanna Rankin reached on an error to start the inning and moved to third on a single by Emily Hall. Rankin scored on a sac fly by Clark for a 1-0 lead. Lacey Morris followed with a single, scoring Hall to make it 2-0.
Mary Baldwin held the 2-0 lead until the fifth inning when Meredith scored five times to take the lead.
Saturday was the final home game for MBU seniors Morris, Clark, Marybeth Strickler, Kelsey Hines and Hughes.
