
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - It was a tough day on the diamond for the Mary Baldwin softball team as the Fighting Squirrels lost both games to Salem College, losing each by the same 6-5 margin.
Trailing 5-1 in the first game, MBU scored four times in the top of the fifth to tie the score. Hadley May led off the fifth with a triple and scored on Emily Hall's sacrifice fly. The Squirrels then loaded the bases on a single by Lacey Morris, a double by Allison Crum and an infield single by Maisie Spivey. Two runs scored on a Salem error and a sac fly by Olivia Gagne pulled MBU even at 5-5.
Salem regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth and held on for the victory.
Leanna Rankin, Hall, Morris and Crum each finished the opener with two base hits.
The Squirrels trailed early in the second game, 2-0, but tied the score with two runs in the third inning. May drove in the first run with a duuble and then scored on a single by Hall, tying the score at 2-2.
After Salem moved ahead with three runs in the fourth, the Squirrels fought back with two runs in the fifth to pull within a run. May and Morris each delivered RBI-singles in the inning.
MBU then pulled even with a run in the sixth. Gagne singled and moved to third on a single by Rankin. Gagne scored on a groundout by Kelsey Hines, knotting the score at 5-5.
Salem pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep.
Rankin and May led the offense with two hits each.
Mary Baldwin will finish its season Saturday with a doubleheader at Methodist.
