Softball Drops Two, One-Run Games At Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Mary Baldwin softball team closed out the season Saturday, dropping a pair of one-run games at Methodist. MBU lost the opener 5-4 and dropped the second game 4-3.

The Squirrels took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Hadley May's two-run homer, Methodist got on the board in the fourth with a run, but the Squirrels scored two runs in the fifth to pad their lead to 4-1. Samantha Grimsley had a key hit in the fifth with a run-scoring single.

Methodist rallied with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take the 5-4 victory.

Leanna Rankin led the Squirrels in the opener with a 2-for-4 effort along with two runs scored.

MBU took the lead in Game 2 with a run in the first. Rankin led off with a single and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Hines. After May was intentionally walked, Rankin stole third and scored on Emily Hall's base hit.

Methodist responded in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead and the score remained that way until the seventh inning when Mary Baldwin moved ahead 3-2 on RBI-singles by Hall and Lacey Morris.

Metnodist, however, scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 4-3.

Rankin was 3-for-4 in Game 2 with two runs scored and Hall was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

MBU finished the season with a 9-26-1 record and a 4-14 conference mark. The Quirrels lost seven games by a single run, including the final four of the season.
