Mary Baldwin Softball Sweeps Salem

STAUNTON, Va. - The Mary Baldwin softball team swept Wednesday's doubleheader with Salem, winning the opener 15-1 and the second game 10-5.

The Fighting Squirrels put the opener away early with 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hadley May and Haley Roberts each belted a three-run homer to highlight the first inning barrage. Oliva Gagne had two hits in the inning, each driving home a run. Allison Crum added a run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly while Reagan Frazier contributed a run-scoring single

MBU added four more runs in the second inning, highlighted by run-scoring hits from Gagne and Frazier. May drove home the Squirrels' final run in the fourth with a single.

May was 2-for-3 in the first game with five RBIs while Crum and Gagne each finished with three runs batted in.

MBU jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the second game and held off the Spirits for the 10-5 victory. 

Crum singled home a run in the first and Sam Charles added a sac fly as the Squirrels led 3-0 after one inning. Four more runs in the second put MBU on top 7-0. Crum delivered the key hit in the second with a three-run double.

Salem got on the board with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Charles singled home a run in the bottom of the inning for an 8-2 Squirrels' lead.

Salem pulled to within 8-5 before the Squirrels put the game away with two runs in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Charles and a bases loaded walk to Emily Hall.

Leanna Rankin and Charles had three hits each and Crum drove in four runs in the second game win.

Frazier pitched a total of five scoreless innings in the two games, earling a win and a save.
