
RALEIGH, N.C. - Mary Baldwin softball traveled Sunday afternoon to William Peace University and the Squirrels split a doubleheader, losing the first game 4-3 in eight innings and winning the second game 4-3.
The Fighting Squirrels will take part in the conference tournament for the first time since 2012.
The first game was a pitcher's dual until the fifth when Peace struck first with two runs. The Squirrels tied it up in the top of the sixth. After a leadoff ripple from Olivia Gagne, Allison Crum added a sac fly to put MBU on the board. Hadley May followed with a homer to tie the score.
The game sent into extras and the Pacers scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win.
Emily McCreery pitched a complete game and allowed only one earned runs and had five strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, the Squirrels opened it with a run in the first . Leanna Rankin led off with single up the middle and stole second. Rankinn moved to third on Emily Hall's single and then scored on May's double.
The Pacers responded with all three of their runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
The Squirrels fought back in the fifth withthree runs to move ahead. Olivia Gagne plated Paige Fix with a single and Crum followed with a run-scoring double to tie the score. Hall added a base-hit, scoring Crum with the go-ahead run.
MBU pitcher, Reagan Frazier worked three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits to pick up the win.
MBU is back in action Tuesday (April. 25) when the team hosts N.C Wesleyan for a conference doubleheader.
