GREENSBORO, N.C. –Mary Baldwin's 2023 softball season ended with a pair of losses Friday at the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament. Mary Baldwin opened play Friday, losing 4-1 to Greensboro, the No. 2 seed. The loss sent the Squirrels to the loser's bracket in the four-team tournament pod where MBU lost to Methodist, 4-1.
Mary Baldwin finished the season with a historic 19-17-1 record, the program's most wins since joining the conference in 2008.
In the first game of the day, the Squirrels fell 4-1 as Greensboro took advantage of errors while keeping the MBU bats silent. Five MBU errors led to all four Greensboro runs as pitchers Emily McCreery and Reagan Frazier combined to allow just seven hits and no earned runs. Hadley May had two of MBU's five hits. May led off the seventh inning with a double and pinch runner Isabella O'Bannion scored on pinch-hitter Sam Grimsley's single.
The offense failed to produce in the second game of the day, a 4-1 loss to Methodist. MBU managed just two hits, one each by May and Olivia Gagne. The Squirrels received another solid pitching effort as Molly Thompson and Morgan Hughes combined to allow seven hits.
