Sprinters Lead The Way at Battleground Relays

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Mary Baldwin Track and Field athletes competed this past weekend at the Battleground Relays located in Fredericksburg, Virginia hosted by Mary Washington University.

The MBU men's roster was led by various strong sprint performances, starting with a fourth place finish in the 100 meters from senior Steven Santiago. Santiago was also a member of the second-place 4x100 relay team that also included Christopher Kirksey, Shyheim Holmes and Donovan Richardson posting a time of 44.48. Continuing with the sprints Kirksey took second place in the 400 while with a D-III Top 10 time of 48.77. Holmes also clocked in a season Best and personal record of 51.55 to place fifth in the event. To Finish off the day for the men's roster Kirksey, Holmes and Santiago would sweep the  top three spots in the 200 meters. In the Jumps, Sophomore Elijah Butler placed third in the triple Jump and took eighth overall in the long jump with a new personal record of 6.11 meters. Freshmen William Reyes led all throwers in the discus with a throw of 29.43 meters while Jonathan Ramirez paced the team in shot sut with a throw of 10.33 meters

On the women's side, the throwers would take the shine for the day. Sophomore Kayla Richardson would throw a season best with 10.17 meters in the shot put, taking a sixth-place finish in the competition. Discus thrower Aurora Valencia-Aldana led the discus group with a throw of 18.99 meters while Richardson threw 15.50m.  Junior Quierra Hawkins continuing with her dominant rookie season with the MBU program, taking seventh place in the women's 200 with a time of 27.36. Imari Knight and Lanadia Tarpley each posted personal records in the women's 200 with times of 28.99 and 30.50 respectively.

After a week break the MBU Squirrels will be back to competition  On April 14 for the Dennis Craddock Invitational at the University of Lynchburg
