ROANOKE, VA - The Mary Baldwin College basketball team lost their season opener to Hollins University 37-61 this afternoon in a non-conference matchup.
Hollins opened with an 8-0 run and steadily built a 16-5 lead in the first quarter. The home team continued to build a commanding lead throughout the half.
Mary Baldwin played Hollins even in the second half but the damage had been done.
Hollins controlled the boards grabbing 65 rebounds to Mary Baldwin's 43. Hollins also outshot Mary Baldwin sinking almost 33% from the floor while the Fighting Squirrels struggled offensively shooting just 17.5% from the floor. Neither team gained any advantage from behind the arc or on fastbreak points.
Kaybria Johnson and Rakeema Willis led Mary Baldwin with 12 points each. Teanna Peavy and Juanaysa Singletary grabbed 7 and 6 rebounds respectively. Shantelle Jennings added 3 steals and 2 assists.
Hollins was led by Jewellanna Parfitt who scored 15 points. Deana Campbell led the team with 13 rebounds.
"I thought they did a great job of taking the game to us. We did not respond well and it got us in trouble early," said head coach Andrew Stephens after the game. He also added, "There will be plenty of things for us to work on and improve. That is the beauty of what we do in athletics. We get instant feedback in games and that tells us what to work on for the next one."
Mary Baldwin College 0-1 (0-0 USAS) will host Bridgewater College on Friday in their home opener.
