STAUNTON, VA - Mary Baldwin College fell to Wesleyan College this afternoon in women's basketball 53-70.
The Wolves jumped out to an early 11 point lead in the first quarter before two free throws by Kaybria Johnson and a three point shot by Juanaysa Singletary brought Mary Baldwin back to within six points to end the period.
In the second quarter, Wesleyan jumped back out to a nine point lead before both teams went cold for the next three minutes. The teams then traded baskets and Wesleyan held a 12-point lead at the half.
The Fighting Squirrels came back to within 6 points in the third quarter behind the hot hand of Kaybria Johnson who scored 9 points in those 10 minutes. But, Wesleyan refused to lose and edged the home team 15-14 in the quarter.
The two teams continued to battle in the final period but Mary Baldwin simply couldn't overcome the deficit built by the Wolves.
Wesleyan took advantage of turnovers scoring 29 points off of Mary Baldwin errors. The visitors also controlled the paint outscoring Mary Baldwin 32-10 in the lane. Mary Baldwin did control the boards outrebounding the visitors 54-48.
Kyla Williamson led Wesleyan with 16 points. Myra Patrick grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Mary Baldwin was led by Kaybria Johnson with 19 points. She was followed by Juanaysa Singletary with 14 points. Teanna Peavy grabbed 12 boards while Precious Parker followed closely behind with 11.
Mary Baldwin College 0-3 (0-0 USAS) travels to Southern Virginia Tuesday night before taking a break for the holiday weekend.
