
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Mary Baldwin women's basketball team traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina to take on Guilford College in nonconference action on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Squirrels took their first loss of the season 59-52 and fall to 2-1, while Guilford improves to 2-0.
Brooke Anders led all scorers with 21 points all coming from beyond the arc where she was 7-17. She also added two rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
Freshman Jalen Gathers added another solid performance for the Fighting Squirrels tallying 10 points going 4-10 from the floor including 2-6 from long range. Gathers also added five boards and two assists.
Demet Saygili led the team with eight rebounds and was also tied for the team lead in assists with three. She also led both teams in steals with four and added five points. Leah Calhoun added seven points with five rebounds.
The Quakers had three of their starters score in double digits, with Carisma Lynn tallying a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four assists. Calyn Davis also tallied 13 points while shooting 3-7 from deep. Miracle Walters scored 10 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had a game high five assists.
To start the first quarter of play, the Fighting Squirrels went down 6-0 before Codie Heilig made a three-pointer to cut the lead in half after two minutes of play. Anders followed up Heilig with another three-pointer to tie the game and MBU went on a 10-0 run to take the lead 10-6. Mary Baldwin lost the lead 11-10 when Julie Carini made a jumpshot with 4:30 left in the quarter. At the end of the first quarter, MBU led 18-15.
In the second quarter the Fighting Squirrels only managed five points, all coming from Saygili, while the Quakers put up 21 points in the quarter to lead at halftime 36-23.
Guilford continued the scoring in the third quarter breaking open the lead 42-23 before Gathers made a three-pointers with 7:38 left in the quarter. Anders made three three-pointers in the quarter, but MBU could only manage to outscore Guildford by one point in the quarter. They went into the fourth down 49-37.
The Fighting Squirrels started the fourth quarter going on a 7-0 run with 7:55 left in the game bringing the score to 44-49. Then MBU went scoreless for the next six minutes and Calhoun started the scoring back up with 2:01 left in the game down 51-47. In the final 1:35 the Quakers made eight free throws to win the game 59-52.
The Fighting Squirrels outscored the Quakers in three of the four quarters, but only managed to score five points in the second quarter while Guilford put up 21 points.
As a team the Fighting Squirrels connected on 27.9% (19-68) from the floor compared to 30.9% (21-68) from the Quakers. Also MBU shot 37.5% (12-32) from three while Guilford shot 26.3% (5-19). Mary Baldwin was out rebounded 64-35 by Guilford.
The Fighting Squirrels will return action on Wednesday, November 20 when they travel to Washington D.C. to take on Trinity (D.C.) at 6 pm.
