MBU Falls to Pfeiffer in Overtime, 101-94

The Mary Baldwin University women's basketball team fell 101-94 in overtime at Pfeiffer on Monday.

MBU (5-5, 5-5 USA South) was led by Jalen Gathers who had a career-high 35 points after just breaking her previous career-high last game with 28 points. Demet Saygili had 22 points for the Fighting Squirrels as well. 

Leah Calhoun also put up a strong performance, recording a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Pfeiffer (3-3, 3-3 USA South) started the game strong, as they jumped out to an 18-3 lead at just under the halfway mark of the first quarter.

A 17-5 run by MBU cut the deficit to three at 23-20, early in the second quarter.

The Fighting Squirrels kept it close the rest of half but trailed 49-48 at the break.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams as neither could pull ahead.

With 1:44 left in the fourth quarter, a three-pointer by Gathers put Mary Baldwin ahead 87-86. Pfeiffer then hit a pair of free-throws to put them up 88-87 at the 1:09 mark.

A three-pointer by Saygli with nine seconds left put MBU back up two. With two seconds left, A'Mya McClain drove the basket and made a layup while being fouled. McClain missed the free throw so the game was sent to overtime tied at 90-90. 

In OT, a 9-2 run by the Falcons helped them secure the win in a game that saw 28 ties and 28 lead changes.

McClain led Pfeiffer with 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting.

As a team, Mary Baldwin shot 43.2 % (35-of-81) from the field and 40% (8-of-20) from three. The Falcons shot 45.6% (36-of-79) and 53.8% (14-of-26) from three.

In accordance with USA South COVID-19 management protocols, the Fighting Squirrels will not play its next two games against Meredith scheduled for Feb. 19 and 21. MBU will take the court again on Feb. 26 when they head to Averett.
