
Emory & Henry connected on 7-of-14 shots from 3-point range in the first half to take a 36-22 lead at the break and the Wasps went on to defeat Mary Baldwin 62-52, in non-conference action Monday evening.
While the Wasps cooled down in the second half, the Squirrels could not get untracked at the offensive end. For the game, MBU connected on just 23 precent of its shots, making 14-of-61 attempts.
Despite the off-shooting night, MBU trimmed the deficit to single digits in the second half.
E&H scored the first eight points of the third quarter to take its biggest lead of the game, 44-22. Mary Baldwin chopped away at the deficit and cut the margin to 14 points, 47-33, entering the fourth quarter.
Trailing 53-34, MBU scored 10 straight to move to within nine points. Jalen Gathers ignited the run with a 3-pointer and a driving layup, making the score 53-39. Jacqumea Britt made two foul shots and then added a layup, pulling the Squirrels to within 53-43, with 3:32 left in the game. Mya Coleman added 1-of-2 at the foul line to trim the margin to single digits 53-44.
After Alexis Hoppers made two free throws for the Wasps, Gathers tallied from long range to pull MBU back to within nine, 56-47, but the Squirrels would get no closer.
Gathers led the Squirrels with 20 points and teammate Hannah Varner added 10 points.
Mary Baldwin enters the holdiay break with a 5-5 record. The Squirrels return to action on Jan. 4 when they host Christopher Newport.
