Mary Baldwin had six players score in double figures Saturday afternoon with Jalen Gathers and Demet Saygili each posting double-doubles in an 87-59 conference victory over Pfeiffer.

The contest was the first for the Fighting Squirrels in more than a month, but the team showed little signs of rust in their first game of 2022. The Squirrels withstood Pfeiffer's constant full-court pressure and led most of the way despite having just seven players available for action.

Gathers led MBU with 22 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Saygili also filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and four assists. Mary Moran and Mya Coleman also flirted with double-doubles. Moran scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Coleman added 14 points and seven boards. A'Cetta Farrait scored 13 points and Kayla Sessoms finished with 10.

The Squirrels led 23-18 after one quarter and the lead was six in the second quarter when MBU used an 8-0 run to take a 33-19 lead. Farrait and Saygili kncoked down mid-range jumpers to put the Squirrels ahead 29-19. Moran added a short baseline jumper and Gathers capped the 8-0 spurt with a driving layup, making the score 33-19 with 5:39 left in the first half. At the break, MBU held a 46-31 advantage.

Mary Baldwin held a double-digit cushion the entire second half and finished with the 28-point victory.

With the victory, MBU moved above the .500 mark with a 6-5 overall record. The Squirrels improved to 2-3 in conference play.
