
BUENA VISTA, Va. - Mary Baldwin was unable to overcome a cpld-shooting second quarter Tuesday night as the Fighting Squirrels fell to Southern Virginia, 71-52, in conference action.
Southern Virginia jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before 3-pointers by Demet Saygili and Jalen Gathers tied the score. A layup by Gathers put the Squirrels ahead 8-6. Another 3-pointer by Saygili put MBU on top 19-17 late in the quarter, but a 3-pointer by the Knights' Taylor Miyasaki switched the lead to the home team, 20-19. Gathers scored on a driving layup with 15 seconds left, gving MBU a 21-20 lead after one quarter.
SVU took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Squirrels 21-5 to lead 42-26 at the half. Mary Baldwin missed all 11 of its shots in the second quarter.
A 3-pointer by Saygili pulled the Squirrels to within eight points, 51-43, with 1:22 left in the third quarter and MBU trailed by nine, 52-43, entering the final 10 minutes.
Southern Virginia scored the first four points of the final quarter and led by double figures the rest of the way.
Saygili and Gathers combined to score 36 of Mary Baldwin's 52 points. Saygili paced MBU with 21 points and Gathers finished with 15. Southern Virginia's Savanna Christensen had a huge game, finishing with 23 points and 24 rebounds.
Mary Baldwin is now 6-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Squirrels are back in action Friday when they travel to William Peace.
